HOW THE BRAINSTEM TRANSFORMS INTENTION INTO ACTION

The Cregg Lab investigates the molecular and functional organization of brainstem circuits that generate specific components of movement, including speed, stop, and turn. We combine circuit manipulation, neural recording, quantitative behavior, and spatial transcriptomics to define how these circuits are organized, uncover the principles by which they control movement, and determine how their dysfunction contributes to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.

Our Research

The brainstem contains circuits that transform signals from higher brain regions into commands for movement. We propose that these circuits collectively generate a broad repertoire of actions—including walk (forward/backward), run, jump, turn (left/right), stop, pitch, and roll—that constitute what we call the Mammalian Locomotor Plan, a modular system for distinct forms of whole-body movement.
